Pupusas are a popular dish around the world and is the signature dish of El Salvador. Pupusas can be considered a healthy food option as they are typically made with nutrient-rich ingredients such as beans, cheese, and vegetables. Pupusas are "thick corn tortillas" stuffed with fillings, such as meat, refried beans, cheese, and squash flowers. Then they are cooked on a traditional grilled called a "comal". They are also made with pork rinds, or refried beans, served with tomato sauce, tan cabbage, and at LLK (Latin Love Kitchen), we love to come up with new flavors.
Here are some popular el Salvadorian vegetarian dishes:
Regular Pupusas: handmade corn cakes filled with beans and cheese. Empanadas de Leche: Oval-shaped balls of ground plantain filled with vanilla custard. Tamales: Plantain leaves are used to cook corn dough pockets filled with things like corn, cheese, and dried fruit. Curtido: Is a topping made of pickled cabbage, onion, and carrot that is used in various cuisines and "Yuca Frita": Cassava and much more.
Pupusas are not only scrumptious, but also very versatile. Making Pupusas at home can be a bit of a challenge. Salvadorans take so much pride in their national dish, and for good reason: They must be made with fresh products and eaten on the spot. Traditionally they are made by cooking the corn kernels with lime for long periods of time and then grinding them up to a pliable doughy consistency.
Pupusas are "masa flour pouches" with delicious fillings — Chicharrón (mixed pork spices and beens) pupusas are one of the most beloved foods in El Salvador; Cooked chicken, carnitas or chorizo all work well chopped or shredded finely enough sitting neatly in the dough. A Pupusas is a thick corn homemade "tortilla" filled with a mixture of gooey cheese, often with ground-cooked pork or finely chopped flower like the Loroco Pupusa, filled with Loroco flower buds.
Once you’re well acquainted with Salvadoran Pupusas, you’ll definitely want to eat them often. There a big variety to choose from. No matter the filling, pupusas pair perfectly with Curtido, a Salvadoran fermented cabbage relish, and its Salsa Roja. Pupusas are naturally gluten free.
